360-degree Vertex (Crown Area) Hair Transplantation

In hair transplantation planning, the crown area, also known as the vertex, is considered to achieve a natural-looking result by creating “rose pattern” channel directions. This ensures a natural appearance whether the hair is worn short or long.

The term “vertex” is of Latin origin and refers to the crown area of the head in hair transplantation. In addition to the planning done in the frontal area, the crown area should also be taken into consideration to complete the aesthetic appearance. Individuals experiencing hair loss in the crown area may achieve a successful appearance in the frontal area, but they may face issues in the back and side profiles.

Vertex Hair Transplantation

When we mention hair transplantation, the frontal area usually comes to mind. However, in male pattern hair loss, although the transplantation area can be divided into 7 zones, these zones can generally be grouped into three main areas: the frontal, mid, and crown areas. The area that individuals primarily use when speaking, looking in the mirror, or taking photos is usually the frontal area. Since the frontal area complements the facial appearance, the planning is typically done from the front to the back. However, depending on the condition of the donor area, if there is a significant gap and the donor area is not sufficient to cover the recipient area completely, planning can be done for the frontal and mid areas. The vertex area is left for a second session, which can be performed approximately 1 year later.

When prioritized, the frontal area can be considered more important than the vertex area, but the transplantation area is not limited to the frontal area alone. To achieve a natural appearance, the crown area needs to accompany the frontal area. Otherwise, individuals may experience issues in the side or back view despite having a strong frontal profile.

360-Degree Hair Transplantation / Crown Area, Vertex Hair Transplantation

To achieve a natural appearance in hair transplantation, a different approach is required for the transplantation in the crown area compared to the frontal area. Therefore, the channel angles are determined as 360 degrees. This ensures a natural appearance whether the person wears their hair short or long. Since the direction of the hair in the crown area becomes more prominent when worn short, the channel directions are carefully determined.

In addition to the channel angles, three different dimensions are taken into consideration for the placement of grafts: right-left, up-down, and depth. Since the tissue thickness in the crown area is greater than in the frontal area, the planning should be adjusted accordingly. To prevent the grafts from remaining on the surface without proper nourishment, the right-left angles should be set as 360 degrees, and the up-down direction should also be adjusted. This achieves a “rose pattern” appearance and provides a natural look.

In hair transplantation planning, the crown area plays an important role as much as the frontal area. With proper planning, hair loss issues in the crown area can be addressed, completing the individual’s aesthetic appearance.
